Itinerary East Java volcano tour: Semeru, Bromo and Ijen - 5 days / 4 nights
A 5 days tour package, the East Java volcano tour to Semeru, Bromo and Ijen. You should be in good health and condition. Climbing Java's highest mountain - active volcano Semeru - in just 2 days is a demanding adventure. Your mornings will be early, days will be bold and evenings fulfilling.

From Surabaya to Malang - if early arrival / pick up you will have time for some side-tours
Pick up in Surabaya - drive to Malang - optional tours possible
You will be picked up in Surabaya at your hotel or at the airport. If time is sufficient and you feel up to it, you have time for an optional tour.
Ideas for the optional tour: visit Batu, Wonosari tea plantation, Botanical gardens in Purwodadi, Krabyakan water source in Lawang, Prigen Safari Park, ....
If you still have to make some preparations or if you need a rest, you can also directly head to Malang.

Whiz Prime Hotel Malang or Max One - The Whiz Prime is just a short walk from Malang's city center. If you need some preparations for your tour this hotel is centrally located. Max One is further from the city center, but the roof top swimming pool is inviting.

Heading to the top of mount Semeru - camping at Kalimati
By Jeep from Malang to Ranu Pane village - hike to Kalimati camp
You will be picked up at 05:00 at your hotel. By 4wd Jeep you will be heading to Ranp Pane village in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. It is a 2 hours drive.
In Ranu Pane you will meet your hiking team. When set to go - please, bring only the necessities - you hike to the enchanting Kumbolo lake.
Have a break at Kumbolo lake, lunch with coffee or tea. Enjoy the seemingly untouched landscape.
Then continue to Kalimati camp on the slopes of mount Semeru. Settle for the night as the next day will start early.

Mount Semeru sunrise tour, midnight wake up
Test your endurance: sunrise at the top of mount Semeru at 3676 m
At about 01:00 your adventure to the top of mount Semeru starts. The hike to the top takes a few hours, depending on your speed.
The last part of the hike is difficult and strenuous. You can watch the sunrise if you arrive early. On clear mornings you can see the sea both north and south of Java.
Remember that you are on top of an active volcano. Mount Semeru erupts every 20 min. Don't get to close to the crater.
When you are getting hungry, it is time to hike back to Kalimati camp. Breakfast will be served.
Then pack your belongings and hike back to Ranu Pane village.
After a break a Jeep will bring you to Cemara Lawang village, north of mount Bromo. You will cross the savanna and the heroic sea of sand. Sunset is waiting....

Bromo sunrise tour - before heading to mount Ijen 
Bromo sunrise tour
At 03:00 the Jeep is waiting in front of your hotel.
It will take 40 min to reach the top of mount Pananjakan. Have a cup of coffee or tea to warm yourself. It is cold at this height. Between 0 and 10 ºC.
Sunrises can be spectacular, depending on weather conditions. Views over Bromo's amazing landscape are stunning.
After sunrise you will be heading to mount Bromo. The Jeep will park near Luhur Poten tempel. It then will be a 45 min walk one way to the top of mount Bromo.
While hiking, don't forget to look back every now and then. The landscape changes fast.
Once back at the Jeep you will be brought back to your hotel to have breakfast. Enjoy a refreshing shower before checking out.
You will continue to Bondowoso city where you will spend the night. You arrive in the afternoon. The hotel has a swimming pool....

Ijen blue fire at Ijen crater lake - Kalibendo coffee plantation and Jagir waterfall 
Ijen crater lake - the third active volcano during your East Java volcano tour
Ijen crater lake is known as the biggest blue fire area in the world. As Ijen is also an active volcano there are risks attached to hike down into its crater with the most acidic lake on earth. Volcanology advices not to hike down.
If you would like to see the blue fire, your tour departs midnight. Again. If you aren't interested in the blue fire you can start around 04:00 or 05:00.
It is a 2 hours drive to Paltidung. At Paltuding your hike to the lake starts. You will need more than 1 hour to hike to the lake, though it is a hike of 3.3 km only. At some points the slope is rather steep.
Take your time at the lake. Meet the world famous sulphur miners. They carry heavy loads of sulphur in bamboo baskets out the crater. Most of the miners reload the sulphur on a trolley to wheel it down Ijen's slopes to the sulhur weighing area in Paltuding.
You can freely walk around at the top of mount Ijen.
Once back at the car you continue to Ketapang harbour. On route you will visit Kalibendo coffee plantation and Jagir waterfall.
If you wish to return to Surabaya let us know. You then will visit Ijen Plateau coffee plantation.
- Mount Semeru is closed between January and April / May as the national park needs time for regenerating. Besides the weather conditions - as it will be raining season - are far from ideal to climb Java's highest mountain.
- As we are dealing with active volcanoes, the status of the volcanoes can change any time.
