Kawah Ijen is the most acidic lake in the world and shows you the largest blue fire area in the world. Due to the road conditions it is far less visited then Mt. Bromo, which is one of Indonesia's most spectacular sights.

Mt. Bromo and Mt. Ijen are definitely two landmarks in East Java. As Mt. Bromo is more accessible it is the most visited, while the greatest acidic lake in the world can be found at the top of mount Ijen. Ijen is actually near Bali. In just 2 days you can visit mount Bromo and mount Ijen.

You will be picked up at midnight and drive to Cemara Lawang village in about 3 hours. In Cemara Lawang you will change cars to a 4wd Jeep. It will take another 40 min before you reach mount Pananjakan.
Sunrise at mount Pananjakan can be marvelous. Sunrises differ every day, depending on weather conditions.

After the sun has risen, you will get back to your Jeep. The Jeep will descend to the ancient caldera in which Mt. Bromo resides. You will cross the black ashen volcanic sea of sand. Please, stop the car if you would like to walk or just experience the moment. Otherwise the car will stop near Luhur Poten temple, from where it is a 45 minutes walk - one way - to the top of mount Bromo.

Once back at the Jeep, you will be driven back to Cemara Lawang. Here you will change back to your more comfortable car to continue to Bondowoso via the winding road over Arak-Arak hill. On route you can have lunch (not included) and stretch your legs. You will arrive in the afternoon.

 

Symbol day 2 - hiking to Ijen crater lake - kawah IjenIjen crater lake - the biggest blue fire area in the world

If you wish the see the blue fire phenomenon, you depart midnight. It is a 2 hours drive to Paltuding.
At Paltuding your hike to Ijen crater lake - also called kawah Ijen - starts. It is obligatory to be guided, as it is still dark and descending into the crater is not without risks. Your guide will bring your gas mask as well.
When the sun is about to rise, you can hike out of the crater back to the top.

If you feel more for a leisurely morning, you can depart at 04:00. You will arrive around 07:30 at the top of mount Ijen from where you will have colorful views over the most acidic lake in the world. Sulphur miners are at work, carrying baskets of about 80 to 100 kg out of the crater.

Take your time to explore this impressive active volcano.

Once back at the parking area, you can find the sulphur weighing area just behind it. All sulphur miners get together to weigh their loads and to reload it on a truck that brings their harvest to the sulphur purifying factory in Licin village.

Then it is time to depart to Ketapang harbour or you next destination. On route to Ketapang you can visit Kalibendo coffee plantation and Jagir waterfall.
The estimated time of arrival in Ketapang is 12 noon. Please note that Bali time is one hour ahead of Java time.
