Itinerary: Bali Ijen Bromo tour, with drop off at Surabaya // 3 days & 2 nights
The Bali Ijen Bromo tour will bring you conveniently in 3 days to 2 spectacular volcanoes. These volcanoes can't be compared. Bromo arose in an amazing 10 km wide caldera, where black as the dominant colour, while Ijen crater lake with it's turquoise lake is world's most acidic lake on earth.

Explore Banyuwangi's coffee
Your Bali Ijen Bromo tour starts after breakfast in Ketapang, at 10:00. Either in the harbour or at your hotel.
By private car you drive to the coffee plantation, where you get to know how coffee is grown, how it is harvested and processed in the factory. Coffee factories aren't operating year round as the activity depends on the harvest.
When time is sufficient, you can also visit the sulpur purifying factory in Licin village. Another possibility is to relax at Jagir waterfall.
At the end of the day you will be brought to your hotel for a short nights rest.

Bromo sunrise tour
Amazing Ijen crater lake, the most acidic lake in the world
We suggest departing at 04:30 as the drive to Paltuding takes about 1 hour.
At Paltuding your hike to Ijen crater lake at the top of Mount Ijen starts. The hike is only 3.3 km, but you might need more than one hour to get to the top. The hike is scenic though.
At the top, the brownish landscape contrasts beautifully with the turquoise coloured lake. You can't walk around the crater as at some points it is too dangerous.
You will meet the sulphur miners both during your hike and once at the top. The miners start working during the night. They chop loose solidified sulphur at the end of ceramic pipes that are placed in the crater. Then they carry heavy loads of sulphur that weigh up to 80 or 100 kg out of the crater up the rim. Once at the crater rim most miners reload their freight on a trolley and wheel it down Ijen's slopes to the sulphur weighing area behind the parking lot.
When you have fully explored the area, you can return to the parking area. After a short coffee break with a local snaack, you will continue to the Ijen Plateau. The fabled Ijen Plateau is a vast volcanic region dominated by the three cones of Ijen, Merapi, and Raung. Its sweeping vistas combined with a temperate climate make it a great place to explore.
Then you continue to Cemara Lawang village to spend the night.
Note: please understand that hiking down into Ijen's crater to see Ijen's Blue Flames (or fire) is officially forbidden at any time. These are the official rules issued by the Indonesian Volcanology department. It is forbidden as the slopes are rather steep, the acidic lake is dangerous with a pH below 0.3 on a scale from 0 to 14 - 7 is neutral, and the volcano unpredictably emits toxic gasses.
If you insist on seeing the blue fire, we can assist you by departing at midnight to Paltuding. Hiking down into the Ijen crater will be at your own risk. Smartine Indonesia Travel can't be held liable in any case that something happens.
Accommodation
Cafe Lava Hostel - this authentic hostel on the brink of the ancient caldera with 10 km in diameter opened its doors in 1988. It is called hostel as it started with 2 rooms only. As its location is exactly at the rim of the caldera, great views guaranteed.
Each room has its private bathroom with hot water, and no heather (daily average temperature in Cemara Lawang village is 18-19 degrees Celsius - night temperatures vary around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius).

Mount Bromo sunrise tour - a surreal landscape of epic proportions
Be ready for your next adventure. A private 4wd Jeep - a Toyota Landcruiser - will pick you up at 03:00.
The magical Bromo. Actually, it is the landscape that makes your jaws drop. A surreal landscape of epic proportions. The black volcanic Sea of Sand and the savanna surrounding the smoking crater of Mount Bromo. The caldera has a diameter of 10 km.
Meet and greet with the sun at the viewpoint at Mount Pananjakan. Sunrises are different every single day. Weather conditions, season and temperatures determine the colours and views during sunrise.
After sunrise, you are heading into the sea of sand to get near mount Bromo. After your Jeep parked it is a 45 minutes walk to the top, the last part is a stair built in ancient times and survived several eruptions. Every now and then look back over your shoulder to admire the ever-changing landscape.
The Luhur Poten temple is an unnatural construction in this marvellous volcanic environment, that will attract your attention. Though, it is seldom open to visitors...
Once back at your Jeep, you will return to Cemara Lawang to have breakfast at your hotel. Have a refreshing shower before checking out and heading to Surabaya.
On route to Surabaya you can visit the Madakaripura waterfalls, if time is sufficient. At the parking area you will get on a motorbike - with driver - and ride in about 15 minutes to the entrance of the waterfall. Then it is a 30 minutes easy hike. Be ready to get wet!
When reunited with your driver, he will drop you off in Surabaya, anywhere is possible, where your Bali Ijen Bromo tour will end.
