Distance and traveling time from Surabaya to mount Bromo

The distance between Surabaya and Bromo is about 125 km, via Probolinggo. You will be heading to Cemara Lawang. The last village at the end of the road with great views over the ancient caldera in which mount Bromo popped up about 40,000 years ago.
Cemara Lawang can be reached by private car in about 3 to 4 hours. Depending on traffic conditions. By public transport you might need about 6 to 7 hours. Waiting time not yet included.


Travel by public transport: the schedule from Surabaya city to mount Bromo

Take a minibus from wherever your are in Surabaya to Bungurasih bus terminal. The bus terminal is also called Purabaya. If the minibus is too far walking from where your are, you can also go by taxi or take a motorbike taxi, called ojek. You can use one of the apps Gojek or Grab. The price depends on the distance to the bus station.
At Bungurasih bus station look for the bus to Probolinggo. It are big buses. Usually it costs around IDR 50,000 per person.
Only get of at Probolinggo bus station. Nowhere else!
Then, take the small bus to Cemara Lawang village. You can find this bus in front of Probolinggo bus station. If you ask around, ask a woman. This bus costs about IDR 40,000 per person. This bus only departs when it is full according to the driver. Waiting time can be as longs as 1.5 to 2 hours. Be patient.
Once you arrived in Cemara Lawang, pick one of the many possibilities to spend the night. In general the quality-price ratio isn't that favorable. One can say over-prized.


Your schedule to mount Bromo from Juanda International Airport Surabyaa

If you arrive at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, take the DAMRI-bus to Bungurasih bus station in Surabaya. It will cost IDR 20,000 per person.
Then follow the steps 1 to 4 as written above to travel by public transport to mount Bromo.


Need to know: rules public transport

* Public buses don't have a time schedule. The bus departs whenever the driver is ready. Mostly that is when the bus is full. Sometimes that can take a while.
* You don't need to - or in many cases even can't - book in advance. Just pick the right bus at the bus terminal, hop on, and pay on the spot. Buses from Surabaya bus station depart regularly 24 hours a day. Probably you will have to wait for 15 minutes as the max.
* Buses from Probolinggo to Cemara Lawang depart till around 17:00 as the road is winding.

* Take into account the time you spend traveling and the extra money you need to spend for a room in Cemara Lawang. If you do a Bromo sunrise tour, you depart midnight. We can pick you up at the airport, at the train station or in Surabaya city.
* The more people you are the cheaper private transport becomes.
* If you take a private tour in stead of a group tour, you don't pick up other tourists along the way to mount Bromo. You won't be stopping and waiting for other passengers.
