Yadnya Kasada ceremony at Mt. Bromo in East Java, Indonesia

Yadnya Kasada Festival is based on a legend

There are many versions of the legend that led to the Yadnya Kasada ceremony. One of them is that a couple named Roro Anteng and Joko Seger remained childless after many years of marriage. Therefore they meditated at the top Mt. Bromo and asking the mountain gods for help. The gods granted them 24 children on the condition that the 25th child must be offered to the volcano. Today, instead of humans, chickens, goats, and vegetables are offered to the active volcano Bromo. Tenggerese offer in order to thank for the abundance of agricultural products and livestock and to stay healthy.

Luhur Poten temple as part of the Yadnya Kasada festival

On the Segara Wedi sand plain - also known as the volcanic black Sand Sea - stands the Hindu temple called Luhur Poten. The temple holds significant importance to the Tenggerese living in the surrounding mountain villages. The temple organizes the annual Yadnya Kasada ceremony. On the 14th day according to their lunar calendar, the Tenggerese congregate at Luhur Poten temple to ask for blessings from Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa and the God of Mount Semeru.

There is a major difference between this temple and the temples one can see in Bali. The Balinese temples are made from red bricks, while the Luhur Poten temple is made from natural black volcano stones.
